New York authorities are maintaining a major emergency operation due to the risk of a partial collapse of a skyscraper located at 235 East 42nd Street, at the corner of Second Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
The 37-story building—which for decades housed the global headquarters of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and is currently being converted into luxury apartments—suffered a serious structural failure following the deformation of a support column on the 21st floor.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed to the JMH International Consortium of Journalists that, in addition to the partial collapse of that column, inspections revealed other significant structural issues.
"The building remains unstable. It is an extremely serious situation," the mayor stated during a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon.
According to city authorities, the structural failure caused the floors between the 21st and 26th levels to begin sagging under the building's immense load.
The incident was detected around 8:00 a.m. when construction workers noticed cracks inside the building. They subsequently observed that several structural columns on the 21st and 22nd floors were beginning to deform; they immediately evacuated the building and alerted emergency services.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) confirmed that a wide security perimeter has been established. Evacuated properties include a nearby school with approximately 400 students, as well as other buildings in the area. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic has also been suspended on several surrounding streets.
FDNY Chief John Esposito reported that the structure continued to show signs of movement even several hours after emergency crews arrived.
Structural engineers are continuously monitoring the building's behavior using high-precision equipment capable of detecting minute displacements. Later in the afternoon, a specialized team entered the building to assess internal conditions and authorized the start of shoring operations aimed at stabilizing the structure and reducing the risk of collapse.

New York authorities are maintaining a major emergency operation due to the risk of a partial collapse of a skyscraper located at 235 East 42nd Street, at the corner of Second Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
