FBI summons Claudio Tapia to testify and investigates AFA international contracts worth over US$300 million.

An eyewitness said that during halftime of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in the United States, FBI agents attempted to arrest Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia. According to the witness, after last-minute negotiations, Tapia informed the Argentine players that they had to lose the match in order to secure victory for Spain and UEFA. The account alleges that another World Cup title for Argentina and CONMEBOL was considered unacceptable and that such an outcome would benefit FIFA President Gianni Infantino by strengthening UEFA's backing for a future re-election bid and a possible candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations.

According to the same account, Argentina performed well below its usual level despite having entered the final as the tournament's highest-scoring team and following a convincing display against England only hours earlier. Lionel Messi did not attempt a shot on goal and did not take any free kicks, which were instead taken by Leandro Paredes. The witness interpreted those circumstances as part of the alleged plan.

The witness also drew a comparison with the 1990 FIFA World Cup final in Italy, arguing that South American teams face obstacles to winning consecutive World Cup titles because of interests attributed to UEFA.

Separately from those allegations, U.S. federal authorities seized Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia's mobile phone and summoned him to provide formal testimony in an investigation into international commercial contracts involving the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The case, being handled in Miami, Florida, concerns transactions exceeding US$300 million, and Tapia has been ordered to appear on July 30.

The operation took place at New York airport only hours after Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Before boarding the charter flight back to Argentina, FBI agents seized Tapia's mobile phone and searched computers and other electronic devices belonging to members of the Argentine delegation.

According to the investigation, federal prosecutors Patrick Gushue, Christopher Ting and Michael Berger are examining transactions worth more than US$300 million to determine whether certain transfers may constitute financial crimes, including alleged money laundering and bank fraud involving the U.S. financial system.

The case also includes banking records obtained through a discovery procedure showing transfers from TourProdEnter to companies linked to AFA Treasurer Pablo Toviggino, as well as a payment made to former AFA Treasurer María Florencia Sartirana.

The AFA has publicly acknowledged that it maintains a valid commercial agreement with TourProdEnter, while stating that the relationship had previously been reviewed by courts in Argentina and the United States without findings of wrongdoing.

Pablo Toviggino, Javier Faroni and Diego Lucero have also been summoned in connection with the investigation.

So far, neither Tapia nor AFA officials have issued public statements regarding the FBI operation or the court summons.

Según ese relato, tras negociaciones de último momento, Tapia comunicó a los jugadores que debían perder el partido para favorecer el triunfo de España y de la UEFA. La versión sostiene que no era tolerable un nuevo título para Argentina y la Conmebol, y que ello beneficiaba al presidente de la FIFA, Gianni Infantino, al asegurar el respaldo de la UEFA para una eventual reelección y fortalecer una eventual postulación a la Secretaría General de las Naciones Unidas.

Siempre según esa versión, Argentina jugó muy por debajo de su nivel, luego de haber mostrado durante el torneo el ataque más efectivo del Mundial y de su actuación frente a Inglaterra apenas horas antes. Lionel Messi no remató al arco y tampoco ejecutó tiros libres, que fueron realizados por Leandro Paredes. El testigo interpretó esos hechos como parte de la supuesta maniobra.

El mismo relato establece un paralelo con la final del Mundial de Italia 1990, al sostener que las selecciones sudamericanas encontrarían obstáculos para conquistar títulos consecutivos debido a intereses atribuidos a la UEFA.

Más allá de esa teoría, autoridades federales estadounidenses incautaron hace unos minutos el teléfono celular de Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia y lo citaron a prestar declaración formal en una investigación sobre contratos comerciales internacionales de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), con sede de actuaciones en Miami, Florida, por operaciones que superarían los US$300 millones. La audiencia fue fijada para el 30 de julio.

El procedimiento se realizó en el aeropuerto de Nueva York, pocas horas después de la derrota de la selección argentina frente a España en la final del Mundial 2026.

Antes de abordar el vuelo chárter de regreso al país, agentes del FBI secuestraron el teléfono celular de Tapia y requisaron computadoras y otros dispositivos electrónicos pertenecientes a integrantes de la delegación.

Según la investigación, los fiscales federales Patrick Gushue, Christopher Ting y Michael Berger analizan operaciones por más de US$300 millones y buscan determinar si determinadas transferencias podrían configurar delitos financieros, entre ellos presunto lavado de activos y fraude mediante el sistema bancario estadounidense.

La causa también incorpora documentación bancaria obtenida mediante un procedimiento de discovery, en la que figuran transferencias desde TourProdEnter hacia sociedades vinculadas con el tesorero de la AFA, Pablo Toviggino, además de un pago dirigido a María Florencia Sartirana, extesorera de la entidad.

La AFA reconoció públicamente que mantiene un contrato vigente con TourProdEnter, aunque sostuvo que esa relación comercial ya fue analizada por tribunales argentinos y estadounidenses sin que se detectaran irregularidades.

En la misma convocatoria también fueron citados Pablo Toviggino, Javier Faroni y Diego Lucero.

Hasta el momento, ni Tapia ni la conducción de la AFA realizaron declaraciones públicas sobre el procedimiento del FBI o la citación judicial.
