The concept known as the "Black Legend" refers to a historical and propagandistic narrative that, since the 16th century, has portrayed Spain and its empire as exceptionally cruel, intolerant and fanatical. Historians generally trace its origins to campaigns promoted by rival powers, including England and the Netherlands, aimed at challenging Spain's dominance by focusing on the conquest of the Americas and the Inquisition.

Following Spain's victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a debate emerged over the way several Spanish media outlets portrayed the conduct of members of Argentina's national team during the final.
Critics of that coverage argue that some reports and opinion pieces have built a narrative depicting Argentine players as the principal protagonists of the controversy. Among the examples they cite are articles published by El Mundo, describing Argentines as "evil," and by the sports daily AS, referring to them as "disgusting."
The same critics also point to coverage of an incident involving Lionel Messi, who alerted the referee to the conduct of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella, whom they allege covered his mouth while insulting an opponent and should have been sent off. They argue that part of the Spanish press instead focused on what it described as "Messi's ugly gesture," while giving less attention to the alleged conduct of the Spanish player.
They also draw comparisons with an earlier incident involving Brazil's Vinícius Júnior and Argentina's Gianluca Prestiani. According to those critics, media coverage differed markedly: while Vinícius received widespread support, Prestiani was not only sent off but also handed a sanction that prevented him from playing in the World Cup.
Media analysts note that narratives developed around major sporting events can have lasting effects on public perception and on the international reputations of those involved, often extending well beyond the events themselves.
