The worst fires in Almería's recent history have broken out, leaving at least 12 people dead. There are 23 injured—many seriously—and dozens of people are missing, raising fears of an even greater catastrophe.
Most of the victims were found inside their vehicles; they had been attempting to flee the fire when they were trapped by smoke and flames.
The fire has devastated at least 3,200 hectares.
Firefighting crews are working to contain the blaze, which—according to Juanma Moreno, President of the Andalusian regional government—appears to have been sparked by a power line falling onto an area of dry scrubland. The flames spread through a wooded area in Almería, in southern Spain.
The region is a popular holiday destination and home to many foreign nationals, particularly from France, Britain, and Belgium.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced in May that Spain would deploy its largest-ever summer wildfire response operation this year, according to local media reports.

Hay 23 heridos, muchos de ellos graves y hay decenas de desaparecidos, lo que hace prever una catástrofe aún mayor.
