Edwards Air Force Base is home to some of the military's most advanced flight test programs, including the Air Force Test Center and the Test Pilot School. At this 480-square-mile base, located in Kern County, pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947. The Boeing-built B-52 Stratofortress first entered service in the 1950s and remains a key component of the Air Force's bomber fleet. This aircraft has been used in conflicts in the Middle East, including recent operations in the Iran-Iraq War.
