But what really bothered James was the disproportionate amount of water used to cool AI systems, in addition to the enormous electricity consumption. Nancy confirmed that she had argued with James ‘Weston’ about her continued use of ChatGPT. For Nancy, ChatGPT was “a sensitive issue” between her and her son, who was an avid naturalist.
“I was using ChatGPT too much”:
“I was using ChatGPT too much. Japan is a country I had a lot of trouble navigating,” Nancy said. “Weston is very against AI because, as you know, he’s interested in sustainable engineering, and AI uses a lot of water and depletes a lot of water resources.”
His family confirmed to the International Consortium of Journalists JMH that the boy was very upset about the global importance of artificial intelligence, and a simple argument with his mother, stemming from her daily use of a well-known AI, led him to leave to be alone. James Weston was last seen leaving a Kyoto train station on May 29. That same night, his phone was turned off and his location services were deactivated.
The Higginbotham family was visiting Japan to celebrate the high school graduation of James Higginbotham's younger brother.
An initial search by Japanese authorities lasted three days and involved some 100 police officers, canine units, and helicopters, but found no trace of him. Then, hundreds of well-meaning Japanese citizens were deeply moved by the disappearance of the "Kinpatsu no shōnen" (金髪の少年), "blond boy," and volunteered their time, closing businesses and postponing university classes. Many even asked members of the International Consortium of Journalists JMH to publicize the situation so that many more would join the search. Sadly, things did not turn out well in a tragedy that has plunged both the United States and Japan into mourning.
“I deeply regret the loss of James Weston. My son is almost his age, and we also argue daily about the use of artificial intelligence and screens. I know that James Weston’s family is devastated, and I also know that we are facing an irreparable tragedy. My heart goes out to them and to the hundreds of Japanese people who moved the world, searching for the “Kinpatsu no shōnen” (blond boy).
