KYOTO, June 6. International Consortium of Journalists JMH – The body of James Weston Higginbotham, a 20-year-old American student who disappeared in Kyoto, Japan, during a family vacation, was found on the outskirts of Kyoto.
What was the terrible discovery like?
James Weston's body was found in a mountainous area by a volunteer search and rescue group of Japanese citizens who contributed their time and expertise to the search for the student.
The cause of death and other details were not released.
The message from James Weston's family:
"Our family is heartbroken," they wrote. "The pain we feel is impossible to express in words."
Who was James Weston?
James Weston Higginbotham was an engineering student from Alabama at Auburn University. His family confirmed to the International Consortium of Journalists JMH that he was very upset about the global importance of artificial intelligence, as he felt it threatened his future career as a computer engineer. A simple argument with his mother, stemming from her daily use of a well-known AI, prompted the boy to leave and seek solitude. James Weston was last seen leaving a Kyoto train station on May 29. That same evening, his phone was turned off and its location services were deactivated.
The Higginbotham family was visiting Japan to celebrate the high school graduation of James Higginbotham's younger brother.
An initial search by Japanese authorities lasted three days and involved approximately 100 police officers, canine units, and helicopters, but found no trace of him. Subsequently, hundreds of well-meaning Japanese citizens were moved by the disappearance of the "Kinpatsu no shōnen" (金髪の少年), "blond boy," and volunteered their time, closing businesses and postponing university classes. Many Japanese people even asked members of the International Consortium of Journalists JMH to publicize the situation so that more people would join the search. Unfortunately, things did not go well in a tragedy that has plunged both the United States and Japan into mourning.
“I deeply regret the loss of James Weston. My son is almost his age, and we also argue daily about the use of artificial intelligence and screens. I know that James Weston’s family is devastated, and I also know that we are facing an irreparable tragedy. My heart goes out to them and to the hundreds of Japanese people who moved the world, searching for the “Kinpatsu no shōnen” (blond boy). We all wanted to find James Weston alive, but reality has told us otherwise,” said Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Human Rights and Child Protection Expert and Director of the JMH International Consortium.

Una búsqueda inicial por parte de las autoridades japonesas duró tres días e incluyó a unos 100 agentes de policía, unidades caninas y helicópteros, pero no encontró ningún rastro de él.
