TOKYO, June 8. International Consortium of Journalists JMH – Utsunomiya, a city north of Tokyo, closed 94 elementary and junior high schools after a bear was sighted in the municipality.
The medium-sized black bear, approximately one meter long, was seen near a park last Saturday.
50,000 Bear Sightings in Japan:
Utsunomiya city authorities are urging residents to keep their doors and windows locked, not to approach the bear if they see it, and to take refuge in the nearest building. The city has also deployed vehicles with loudspeakers to alert residents. Police and the local hunters' association resumed the search for the animal this morning.
This year, a record 50,000 bear sightings have been recorded in Japan, concentrated in the northeast of the country. These animals are not usually seen so close to Tokyo. However, last month, a Russian hiker was injured by a bear in Okutama, on the western edge of the metropolitan area, while another appeared shortly afterward in the city of Hachioji.
Last week, a bear in Fukushima attacked four people and entered a company office, injuring an employee, before heading to a factory, from which it is believed to have escaped by opening a window from the inside.
Bear attacks in Japan have increased in recent years, with record numbers of deaths and injuries. Local governments are exploring various measures to respond to this situation, including CCTV cameras linked to artificial intelligence analytics to try to track their movements.
There are more than 40,000 bears in Japan: While exact population figures are unavailable, it is estimated that there are about 42,000 Asiatic black bears on Japan's main island of Honshu, and their numbers are believed to have increased in line with the rise in sightings. These aggressive animals can reach up to 1.5 meters in length and weigh up to 120 kg.
Brown bears: The larger brown bears inhabit only the northern island of Hokkaido. Males average 2 meters in length and can weigh up to 400 kg. Their population is estimated at around 12,000 individuals.

東京、6月8日 国際ジャーナリスト連合（ICJ）JMH発 – 東京北部に位置する宇都宮市は、市内でクマが目撃されたことを受け、小中学校94校を休校とした。
体長約1メートルの中型のツキノワグマが、先週土曜日、公園付近で目撃された。
日本でクマの目撃件数5万件：
宇都宮市当局は、市民に対し、クマを見かけた場合はドアや窓を施錠し、近づかず、最寄りの建物に避難するよう呼びかけている。また、拡声器を搭載した車両を配備し、市民に注意喚起を行っている。警察と地元の猟友会は、今朝からクマの捜索を再開した。
今年、日本国内でクマの目撃件数が過去最多の5万件を記録しており、その多くは東北地方に集中している。クマが東京近郊で目撃されるのは異例のことだ。しかし先月、首都圏西端の奥多摩市でロシア人ハイカーがクマに襲われ負傷し、その後まもなく八王子市でもクマが目撃されました。
先週、福島県でクマが4人を襲い、会社のオフィスに侵入して従業員1人に怪我を負わせた後、工場に向かいました。工場からは内側から窓を開けて逃走したとみられています。
近年、日本ではクマによる襲撃が増加しており、死傷者数は過去最多を記録しています。地方自治体は、クマの行動を追跡するために人工知能（AI）分析と連携した監視カメラの設置など、様々な対策を検討しています。
日本には4万頭以上のクマが生息しています。正確な個体数は不明ですが、本州には約4万2000頭のツキノワグマが生息していると推定されており、目撃情報の増加に伴い、その数も増加していると考えられています。これらの攻撃的な動物は、体長1.5メートル、体重120キログラムに達することもあります。
