Tragödie auf den Malediven. Die römische Staatsanwaltschaft ermittelt wegen des Sauerstoffflaschen Unfalls.

Quellen der Staatsanwaltschaft Rom bestätigten dem Internationalen Journalistenkonsortium JMH, dass am Freitag eine offizielle Untersuchung eingeleitet wurde, um den Tod von fünf italienischen Staatsbürgern bei einem Tauchgang im Vaavu-Atoll auf den Malediven am Donnerstag, dem 14. Mai 2026, aufzuklären. Die Justizbehörden konzentrieren sich in ihren Ermittlungen auf einen möglichen technischen Defekt der verwendeten Atemgeräte.

Das italienische Außenministerium bestätigte, dass die Verstorbenen Teil einer Gruppe waren, die eine 50 Meter tiefe Höhle nahe der Insel Alimathà erkundete. Unter den Opfern befinden sich die Lehrerin Monica Montefalcone, ihre Tochter Giorgia, der Biologe Federico Gualtieri, die Forscherin Muriel Oddenino und der Tauchlehrer Gianluca Benedetti.

Sauerstoffvergiftung: Die Experten der Staatsanwaltschaft gehen von einer vermuteten Sauerstoffvergiftung aus, die auf einen schwerwiegenden Fehler beim Befüllen der Druckluftflaschen zurückzuführen ist. Dieser Verstoß gegen die Sicherheitsvorschriften hätte dazu geführt, dass die Taucher in der Hochdruckumgebung das Bewusstsein verloren. Lokale Rettungskräfte bargen am Donnerstagmorgen die sterblichen Überreste einer Person in einer tiefen Höhle, nachdem der Kontakt zur Gruppe abgebrochen war. Obwohl bereits einige Leichen geborgen wurden, wird die Suche nach allen Überresten vom Meeresgrund fortgesetzt.

Erneuter Unfall auf den Malediven:

Dieser Unfall ereignete sich nur wenige Wochen nach einem weiteren schweren Vorfall auf den Malediven. Ein frisch verheirateter spanischer Arzt verlor während seiner Flitterwochen auf den Malediven ein Bein, nachdem er von einem Hai angegriffen worden war. Der Angriff ereignete sich im April, und der junge Mann musste im ADK-Krankenhaus in Malé operiert werden.

Risikoreiche Aktivitäten:

Höhlentauchen ist nicht mit Schwimmen im Meer oder Schnorcheln vergleichbar. Es erfordert Kenntnisse über Tiefe, Orientierung, Luftkontrolle, eingeschränkte Sicht und einen deutlich geringeren Reaktionsspielraum. In geschlossenen oder halboffenen Gewässern können technische Defekte, Strömungen, Orientierungsverlust oder Panikreaktionen schnell zu lebensbedrohlichen Notfällen führen. Die Malediven zählen nach wie vor zu den beliebtesten Reisezielen weltweit, doch diese Vorfälle mahnen uns, dass das Paradies auch Risiken birgt – insbesondere bei Abenteueraktivitäten, auf offener See oder im Umgang mit wilden Meerestieren.

Las autoridades judiciales centran sus pesquisas en una posible falla técnica relacionada con el equipo de respiración utilizado en la inmersión.

El Ministerio de Exteriores de Italia confirmó que los fallecidos formaban parte de un grupo que exploraba una cueva a 50 metros de profundidad cerca de la isla de Alimathà. Entre las víctimas se encuentran la docente Monica Montefalcone, su hija Giorgia, el biólogo Federico Gualtieri, la investigadora Muriel Oddenino y el instructor Gianluca Benedetti.

Intoxicación por oxígeno:

La principal hipótesis que manejan los peritos de la Fiscalía apunta a una presunta "intoxicación de oxígeno" derivada de un error crítico durante la carga de las botellas de aire comprimido. Este fallo en los protocolos de seguridad habría provocado la pérdida de conocimiento de los buceadores en un entorno de alta presión.

Los equipos de rescate locales localizaron los restos de una persona en una cavidad profunda tras perder contacto con el grupo durante la mañana del jueves. Aunque se han recuperado algunos cuerpos, las labores de búsqueda continúan activas para rescatar la totalidad de los restos del fondo marino.

Otro accidente en Maldivas:

El accidente llega apenas unas semanas después de otro grave accidente en Maldivas. Un médico español recién casado, perdió una pierna tras ser atacado por un tiburón durante su luna de miel en Maldivas. El ataque ocurrió en abril y el joven tuvo que ser intervenido en el hospital ADK de Malé.

Actividades con riesgo:

El buceo en cuevas no es una actividad comparable al baño en el mar o al snorkel turístico. Implica profundidad, orientación, control del aire, visibilidad limitada y menor margen de reacción ante cualquier problema. En un entorno cerrado o semiconfinado, un fallo técnico, una corriente, una pérdida de referencia o una reacción de pánico pueden convertirse rápidamente en una emergencia fatal.

Maldivas no ha dejado de ser uno de los grandes destinos turísticos del mundo, pero estos episodios recuerdan que el paraíso también tiene riesgos cuando se entra en actividades de aventura, mar abierto o fauna marina salvaje.

Oxygen poisoning:

The main hypothesis being considered by the Public Prosecutor's Office experts points to suspected "oxygen poisoning" resulting from a critical error during the filling of the compressed air cylinders. This failure in safety protocols would have caused the divers to lose consciousness in a high-pressure environment.

Local rescue teams located the remains of one person in a deep cave after losing contact with the group on Thursday morning. Although some bodies have been recovered, the search continues to recover all the remains from the seabed.

Another accident in the Maldives:

This accident comes just weeks after another serious incident in the Maldives. A newlywed Spanish doctor lost a leg after being attacked by a shark during his honeymoon in the Maldives. The attack occurred in April, and the young man had to undergo surgery at the ADK hospital in Malé.

Risky activities:

Cave diving is not an activity comparable to swimming in the sea or tourist snorkeling. It involves depth, orientation, air control, limited visibility, and a shorter margin for reaction to any problem. In an enclosed or semi-enclosed environment, a technical failure, a current, a loss of bearings, or a panic reaction can quickly escalate into a fatal emergency. The Maldives remains one of the world's top tourist destinations, but these incidents serve as a reminder that paradise also carries risks when engaging in adventure activities, open water, or encountering wild marine life.

Panic: Because the exit was nowhere to be seen, panic erupted within seconds.

Gas mixture: An accident involving the divers' oxygen cylinders is not being ruled out.

Oxygen toxicity: In a moment of panic, the body demands a large amount of air to breathe, a phenomenon known as hyperventilation. Doing so with oxygen pumped from cylinders at a depth of approximately 60 meters can trigger collapse. 

La policía de Maldivas manifestó al Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH, presente en el lugar, que mantiene abiertas varias líneas de investigación. Una de ellas apunta a que el mal tiempo redujo la visibilidad dentro de la cueva, provocando que el grupo se desorientara y agotara el aire mientras intentaba encontrar la salida. Según medios italianos, el hecho de que ninguno lograra ascender refuerza esta posibilidad.

¿Cómo ocurrió la tragedia?

El grupo había embarcado en el yate Duke of York, una embarcación de vida a bordo destinada a turistas especializados en buceo. La desaparición se produjo cerca de Alimatha, un área conocida por sus cavernas y desniveles pronunciados. Tras el aviso, la Guardia Costera desplegó embarcaciones rápidas y aeronaves para iniciar la búsqueda.

Uno de los cuerpos fue hallado dentro de una cueva a unos 60 metros de profundidad. Las autoridades creen que los otros cuatro se encuentran en la misma cavidad, lo que apunta a un incidente simultáneo que impidió a cualquiera de ellos regresar a la superficie.

How did the tragedy occur?

The group had boarded the Duke of York yacht, a liveaboard vessel designed for tourists specializing in diving. The disappearance occurred near Alimatha, an area known for its caverns and steep drop-offs. After the alert, the Coast Guard deployed fast boats and aircraft to begin the search.

One of the bodies was found inside a cave at a depth of approximately 60 meters. Authorities believe the other four are in the same cavity, suggesting a simultaneous incident that prevented any of them from returning to the surface.

What are the hypotheses surrounding the tragedy?

Maldivian police told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists, present at the scene, that they are pursuing several lines of investigation. One suggests that bad weather reduced visibility inside the cave, causing the group to become disoriented and run out of air while trying to find their way out. According to Italian media, the fact that none of them managed to ascend reinforces this possibility.
