PARIS. May 26. International Consortium of Journalists JMH — France is experiencing its worst May in decades due to a heat wave, or canicule, that has already left seven dead. Schools across the country are on alert, and some sporting events have been suspended.
Roland Garros:
Paris is currently hosting the Roland Garros tennis tournament, with every set closely watched by the thermometer and the players' condition. There is also concern about the Tour de France, which will begin in a few weeks.
The national meteorological service, Météo-France, reported that a record temperature for the month of May was broken on Monday, May 25. It also warned that Tuesday will be even hotter.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will chair an inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday regarding the heat wave "to assess the preparedness of state services" in the face of this exceptional heat wave, his office announced on Monday.
The 2002 Heatwave:
In 2002, France experienced its worst heatwave on record. The exact number of deaths was never established, but thousands died.

Francia atraviesa el peor mes de mayo en décadas por una ola de calor o canicule que ha dejado ya siete muertos. Los colegios de este país están en alerta y algunas actividades deportivas han quedado suspendidas.
Roland Garros:
París celebra estos días el torneo de tenis Roland Garros mirando a cada set el termómetro y el estado de los jugadores. También preocupa el Tour de Francia que llegará en unas semanas.
El servicio meteorológico nacional, Météo-France, ha informado que el lunes 25 de mayo se batió un récord de temperatura para un mes de mayo. Y ha advertido de que la jornada del martes será aún más calurosa.
El primer ministro francés, Sébastien Lecornu, presidirá el jueves una reunión interministerial sobre la ola de calor “para evaluar la preparación de los servicios del Estado” frente a este episodio de calor excepcional, según anunció su entorno este lunes.
La canicule de 2002:
En el año 2002 Francia tuvo la peor la ola de calor registrada hasta la fecha. Nunca se estableció el número exacto pero pero fueron miles los que murieron entonces.
