The World Organization Bullying Without Borders confirms the release of Olivier M., a 9-year-old boy who was held captive for over a year inside a van by his father. He has been freed in Hagenbach, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France.
Following a tip from a neighbor and BSF collaborator about a suspicious van stopped in a certain area, alerts were issued for missing children in France. Within minutes, Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, from Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), issued search and arrest warrants to find the boy. Olivier was naked and malnourished. His 43-year-old father was immediately arrested, and the child was placed in state custody.
How was Olivier found? Sources linked to the French Gendarmerie confirmed to BSF that they found the boy "lying in the fetal position, naked, covered with a blanket on a pile of garbage and near excrement." Due to the prolonged sitting position, the boy was no longer able to walk. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
For more than a year, the boy survived with only a few clothes and had to urinate in plastic bottles and defecate in garbage bags. It is estimated that his last shower was in late 2024, when he was seven years old.
Officers discovered the boy in Hagenbach, a small town of 800 inhabitants in northeastern France, after being alerted by a neighbor and BSF collaborator who had heard "noises like a child" coming from a van parked in a private courtyard shared by several houses.
The boy told investigators that his father's partner "no longer wanted him in the apartment and wanted him committed to a psychiatric hospital," and that his father had locked him in the van "to avoid having him committed."
The father and his partner live with two girls, ages ten and twelve, one his daughter and the other hers, who are "well supported" while the boy remained in the vehicle. The father admitted that he kept him kidnapped and deprived of care since "November 2024" to protect him from the woman.

The prosecutor maintains that "no medical evidence" indicated any possible psychiatric problems in the boy, contrary to what his father says. Authorities have taken temporary custody of the three children while the investigation continues.
His absence was not a cause for concern at school. The boy attended school in Mulhouse until the 2023-2024 academic year, and the school closed his file when the family indicated he would be enrolled elsewhere. "He disappeared overnight," according to neighbors and witnesses interviewed by investigators.
He left the house twice in 2025 when the couple was not present.
The accused claimed that in May 2025 he let the boy out of the van and allowed him into the apartment during the summer, when the rest of the family was on vacation. The father is currently in pretrial detention.
The man's partner, who is not the boy's mother, also faces charges, including failure to report child abuse, aggravated unlawful deprivation of liberty, and other charges.

Luego del aviso de una vecina y colaboradora de BSF sobre una furgoneta sospechosa detenida en un lugar. Se activaron las alarmas por búsqueda de menores en Francia y en pocos minutos el Fiscal Nicolas Heitz, fiscal de Mulhouse (Alto Rin) emitió órdenes de allanamiento y de detención para encontrar al pequeño. Olivier estaba desnudo y desnutrido. El padre de 43 años de edad, ha sido detenido de inmediato y el niño puesto bajo tutela estatal.
¿Cómo encontraron a Olivier?
Fuentes ligadas a los Oficiales de La Gendarmerie de Francia, confirmaron a BSF que encontraron al niño «tumbado en posición fetal, desnudo, cubierto con una manta sobre un montón de basura y cerca de excrementos». Debido a la posición sentada de forma prolongada, el niño ya no conseguía caminar. Fue atendido de inmediato en un hospital cercano.
Durante más de un año el niño sobrevivió con apenas un poco de ropa y tuvo que orinar en botellas de plástico y hacer sus necesidades en bolsas de basura. Se calcula que su última ducha ocurrió a finales de 2024, cuando tenía siete años.
Los agentes descubrieron al niño en Hagenbach, una pequeña localidad de 800 habitantes en el noreste de Francia, después de haber sido alertados por una vecina y colaboradora de BSF que había oído «ruidos de niño» en una furgoneta aparcada en un patio privado de varias viviendas.
El pequeño contó a los investigadores que la pareja de su padre «ya no lo quería en el apartamento y deseaba que lo internaran en un hospital psiquiátrico» y que su padre lo había encerrado en la furgoneta «para no internarlo».
El padre y su pareja viven junto a dos niñas de diez y doce años, una hija de él y la otra de ella, «bien mantenidas» mientras el niño permanecía en el vehículo. El progenitor reconoció que lo mantuvo secuestrado y privado de cuidados desde «noviembre de 2024» para protegerlo de la mujer.

El fiscal defiende que «ningún elemento médico» atestó posibles problemas psiquiátricos del niño, contra lo que dice su padre. Las autoridades se han hecho cargo provisionalmente de los tres menores mientras continúa la investigación.
En el colegio no se sospechó de su ausencia. El niño fue al colegio hasta el curso 2023-2024 en Mulhouse y la escuela «archivó su expediente» cuando la familia le indicó que sería escolarizado de otro modo. «Desapareció de un día para otro», según vecinos y testigos interrogados por los investigadores.
Salió en dos ocasiones en 2025 cuando la pareja no estaba presente.
El acusado afirmó que en mayo de 2025 dejó salir al niño de la furgoneta y le permitió acceder al apartamento durante el verano, cuando el resto de la familia estaba de vacaciones. El padre se encuentra en prisión preventiva.
La pareja del hombre, que no es la madre del niño, también enfrenta cargos, entre ellos no denunciar malos tratos, privación ilegítima de la libertad agravada y otros cargos.
